2017/2018 Pro Dirt Late Model Series Kicks This Off Weekend

The time has finally come, the off season has drawn to a close and the thunder and lightning Late Models will return to the track this Saturday!!!

The opening round of the 2017/18 XLI Pro Dirt Series will be held at Ellenbrook Speedway this Saturday afternoon in an event which will double as the annual Ray Tulk Memorial.

Ray and his wife June were awarded Life Membership of the RDA of WA back in 1981 after having played a huge part of shifting the RDA from Wattle Grove Speedway to Ellenbrook. Ray was also one of the founding members of the Late Models, serving in a number of positions including as Treasurer and in Technical. Sadly Ray passed away in 2004.

A strong field of eighteen cars will hit the track to honour Ray, in what will also be the opening round of the XLI Pro Dirt Series, with the nominations led by defending (and four time) Ray Tulk Memorial winner Warren Oldfield who last claimed the event two years ago (in 2015) before last year’s version of the event was rained out.

Oldfield enjoyed much success in last year’s Pro Dirt Series, claiming a main event win and will be hopeful of starting off his campaign in a similar fashion, looking to make it four wins in a row in the season opener.

He of course will be challenged by many drivers, none more so than perennial competitor Brad Blake and the very impressive Kye Blight. Blake is always quick straight out of the box and goes in as one of the favourites, while Blight returns from an offseason trip to the United States of America, where he took in a lot of racing and will be keen to sink his teeth into some racing action back home.

Jay Cardy has finished on the podium in this race previously and last season recorded a strong series result, so he certainly knows what it takes to run towards the front. As the current CEO he will be hoping to get some strong results on track while former CEO Michael Holmes is also in the field and with some updated equipment could be another one to watch.

Rob Wells has contested a number of development series rounds at the Ellenbrook venue in the off season as has Ken Melvin and Jayden Meckenstock, and all will use that knowledge as they attack the Pro Dirt brigade once again, while rookie drivers in Michael Comley and Daniel Ameduri will be hopeful of solid performances on their home track.

‘Red Hot Roni’ Veronica McCann will be keen to impress once again after having previously grabbed a feature win at the Ellenbrook venue, while Matt Goodlad, James Batley and Jason Bond will also be keen to get some more runs on the board in the opening XLI Pro Dirt Series round.

They will be joined by a whole host of other names in Ryan Ludlow, Simon McNab, Jai Mazzini and David Nylander.

The opening round would not be possible without support from our series sponsors in XLI, Di Candilo Steel City, Pancho’s Mexican Restaurants, CTM Recruitment, Cardy Racing Components, APM Roofing, Dirt Track Nutters and Racin’ Tyres and Accessories.

Racing begins at 3pm this Saturday, with gates opening at 12 noon. Ellenbrook Speedway will be the place to be this Saturday so make sure you are there to see the thunder and lightning Late Models hit the track for the first time this season!
