At the Perth Motorplex tonight, Ryan Halliday became the first Late Model driver in season 2018/19 to win two feature races as he claimed the victory in honour of ‘The General’ John Day.
The meeting, doubling as Round Six of the Sims Metal Management Pro Dirt Series, looked destined to have its sixth different winner in as many rounds when Marc Giancola dominated most of the feature, but it wasn’t to be as he was forced infield while in sight of the white flag, handing Halliday the victory over the reinvigorated Michael Holmes, while Jay Cardy claimed another podium finish when he finished third.
Cardy was the man who qualified on pole position, joined on the front row by Giancola. As the race went green Giancola got the jump and quite simply raced away into the distance as the rest of the field jostled for position behind him.
Brent Vosbergen very quickly made his way up behind Cardy and would shortly challenge him for second, the two fighting hard before Cardy had a half lose, Vosbergen left with nowhere to go and into his side, both drivers slowing and going sideways in turn two, allowing last start winner Michael Holmes to catch the duo, pass Vosbergen and sit right on Cardy’s tail.
Giancola was still pulling away up front while Halliday arrived on the scene of the battle or second after also passing Vosbergen.
Holmes went low on Cardy who was running the highline and the duo would battle side by side for a number of laps, all the while Halliday sneaking up on them and waiting for his chance to move through.
Lap ten saw Holmes just about take the position, but Cardy held on by 0.033 of a second as they crossed the line, then the lap after the margin was just 0.026 seconds. As the duo found their way in lapped traffic on lap twelve, Holmes finally got the nose in front for second. Cardy fought back on the outside, but Jamie Moon slowed right in front of the duo, who were still in thick traffic as they were battling, and most cars avoided the stranded Moon, but Cardy was unlucky and hit the back of him, somehow able to keep going.
This would bring out the yellow lights with Moon stranded, Cardy getting his spot back, Giancola losing his big lead and twelve laps complete with eighteen remaining.
The big winner on the restart was Ryan Halliday who snuck past almost everyone into second place as the green flag flew again, but Giancola was again too strong as he led away from the front. Cardy would settle into third as Holmes, then Vosbergen, then Paul Stubber, who had come from the rear in a borrowed car, took turns in the fourth placing.
Eventually Holmes would clear the rest and set out after Cardy once again, making the pass on lap fifteen.
With two laps to go disaster struck, with Giancola, despite being a good distance away from Halliday, suddenly slowed, headed infield, with a fire underneath his car and handing the lead to Halliday who was well behind.
Halliday would hold strong for the final lap and a half, Holmes holding on for second and Cardy finishing third.
The win would be Halliday’s second of the season and fifteenth career feature win at the venue. Courtesy of tonight’s results though, it is Michael Holmes who is the new series leader, after Brad Blake, who led the points coming into tonight, was forced to race the night in a borrowed car. Holmes has a thirteen point break over second placed Cardy, while Giancola sits in third.
After tonight’s show the Late Models now have a well-earned rest over the Christmas break before returning to the track immediately after the festivities conclude, on Boxing Day, the 26th of December for Round Seven of the Sims Metal Management Pro Dirt Series!
